Why does my Acer Aspire slow almost to a stop with the battery installed?

I have an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop here and when it boots into Windows it almost locks up. It goes so slow that when you move the mouse cursor it takes ages for it to move and then freezes before it moves again. I removed the main battery and it is fine without it. Every time I re-insert the battery the problem comes back. I have booted into Windows without the battery and re-inserted it but the problem remains. Any ideas anyone?
